The verb TO BE is the verb "ser/estar" in Spanish. However, remember translation is not 100% precise.
The verb TO BE is a verb of state, so you can use it to express feelings or states, such as "I AM nervous" or "I AM hungry", to tell the age, as in: "She IS 16 ", and for many other purposes.
More examples:
* "I AM happy"
In Spanish, this can be translated as "Yo SOY/ESTOY feliz".
*We ARE brothers
In Spanish, this would be "Nosotros SOMOS hermanos"
*We AREN'T at school
In Spanish: "Nosotros NO ESTAMOS en la escuela"
But.... --> "I AM 15 years old"
In Spanish, this is not translated as "Yo SOY o yo ESTOY 15 años". This is translated as "Yo TENGO 15 años"
